Disadvantages Of Cosmetic Surgery Essay Example For Students

Disadvantages Of Cosmetic Surgery Essay Nobody knows about cosmetic surgery better than Edward Mondeck and his twochildren, ages 9 and 11. Rosemarie Mondeck, 39, decided to have a bit of tummyfat removed after having two kids. She let the doctors use a new procedurecalled tumescent liposuction. The patients are primed prior to surgery byinjecting large amounts of diluted local anesthetic and epinephrine, drugs thatshrink capillaries. They reduce bleeding and make it easier to suck fat outaccording to doctors. After the drugs were injected, Rosemarie went into cardiacarrest and died. All she had was a fatty area above her bellybutton, states Edward. Look at what can happen. This goes to show you that cosmeticsurgery is not only dangerous, but can also result in death. Cosmetic surgery isdefined as a surgery that improves ones self-image by correcting a certainarea of the body that the patient finds unsightly. Its biggest benefit ispsychological. It is used to minimize age-related features in baby boomers suchas wrinkles and sagging skin. A big part of self-esteem is feeling that youlook good. We can cure an insecurity in 30 minutes that a psychiatrist cantcure in 30 years, H. George Brennen, M.D., Plastic and ReconstructiveSurgery, states in the magazine article from Young and Modern. Many people wantto get cosmetic surgery because they feel that they dont look good. Acertain level of attractiveness can open doors. It can make a difference in ateens social life and later on, in a career, (Bloch 60). It can help youto look better and pursue a career in modeling or a field related to looks. Shouldnt people accept themselves for who they are? As Andrea Cooper statesin the article Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Make Me the Prettiest of ThemAll, All the cosmetic surgery in the world wont help if you dontfeel good on the inside. It wont change you if you already dont feelgood about yourself. You will just make it worse by trying to change yourself soyoull feel more attractive. People age. Especially today when they are activeand in the work force. They feel good on the inside, but when they look at theirimage, they look at a face or body that they dislike. I dont see a problemat all with matching what you see with how you feel, (Davis 77). If you werehoping cosmetic surgery would add excitement and spice to your life, or rekindlean old flame, you might be disappointed. It will only change physical aspects. Your mental aspects may still be disappointing. Youre still yourself, you arejust learning to cope better with your body now that you like it. You can learnto be more confident and self-assured. During the periods in between thewars, Americans participated in a new, visual culture, where appearance seemedto rank even higher in importance. The postwar era also saw an increase insurgery to minimize or eradicate physical signs of race or ethnicity,(Shepard 2006). Americans began to see people of different origins, and theyliked their look better. Other people didnt like their appearances an examplebeing blacks. Whites thought they were better than blacks and used them asslaves just because of their skin color. Things like that make you want tochange your looks so that other people wouldnt make fun of you or ridiculeyou about your looks. Research shows that today looks play a major role in oursociety. Women and men look at magazines and see the pictures of the skinnymodels. Then they thi nk that theyre ugly and fat because they might not bethat skinny or have those perfectly proportioned face. Remember the sayingits whats on the inside that counts. You should go by that because thepictures of the people you think are perfect probably have many moreproblems than you. Live to like yourself and dont go by what others think ofyou. Some types of cosmetic surgery are rhinoplasty, the reduction of a nose, otoplasty, to correct protruding ears, blepharoplasty, which is to removedrooping skin around eyes, and rhytidectomy, face-lift. People tend to wantblepharoplasty as they get older. It has many complications that could arouseincluding bleeding, swelling, delayed wound healing, infection, drooping ofupper or lower lid, asymmetry, double vision, and dry eye syndrome. Duringrecovery, the first 24- 48 hours you have substantial swelling and blurryvision. The stitches arent removed until four to five days later. Breastenlargements are a common sought surgery. Women want bigger breasts so that menwill like them better or just to look bigger. Complications that could occur aredelaying wound with diabetes, history of radiation, autoimmune disease, smokers, capsular contracture, bleeding, infiction, and irregularity of skin. Afterhaving surgery there is swelling, and there may be some asymmetry. The firstweek you cant lift anything or exercise. The outer shell of the silicon isfilled with saline. If the saline get a hole, the leak can result in a flatimplant and necessitating surgical replacement. Risk of serious complicationsfor most cosmetic procedures is as high as 2%, with some procedures being moreproblematic, (Podolsky 74). Listen to all of these complications that couldoccur and recovery methods. Are you willing to go through this? What if thishappens to you while you are getting surgery? Are you willing to risk yourperfectly normal body for one that could be even worse after surgery? Thinkabout all of these. This was only two of the types of surgery. T hink about howlong it would be to list the rest of them. When you go in to talk to the doctorabout your surgery, they will most likely either take a picture or they have acomputer-imaging machine to show you what the change will look like. For apicture, if only the lighting, angle, and film are changed, you can look like atotally different person with great results when no surgery has been done. Inthe computer imaging, its technically impossible for your surgeon toreplicate those results. You will go into surgery thinking you know whatyoull look like when youre done, but when you get done, you will looktotally different. Sometimes people are going through life changes and theythink that it will solve their problem, so they go ahead with it. In the end, people are more depressed after the surgery because they dont like the waythey look. Doctors should advise patients to look at the whole picture andsuggest procedures that are in keeping with your overall appearance. Today amore natura l appearance is popular. Liposuction has become the nations favoritecosmetic procedure. It is not appropriate to get liposuction done for generalobesity. You have to have always consistently eaten well and worked out. Youhave to try to rid yourself of the problem area first. If it doesnt go awayafter trying, then you might consider it. Slick marketing campaigns make iteasy to think of cosmetic surgery as just another off-the-shelf consumerproduct, its purchase about on par with buying a new computer system. Butsurgery is surgery. There is pain. Recovery can be lengthy and uncomfortable. Hamlets procrastination and co Essay24 June l998: 2006. Shiffman, Dr. Felix. Cosmetic Surgery. Settlement or Invasion free essay sample

One example of this is John Street, who moved to Australia, â€Å"†¦John Street – an instance before us of what a man even with little energy and small capital can do. He is now possessed of 2000 acres of fine land, 1600 sheep and cattle, a house and all the comforts he can expect and desire. † (quote from Bassett, The Hentys, pp. 34-36) There was lots of land on offer and the amount of land one owned dictated social status. John Batman, leader of the Port Phillip expedition, selected eight natives and claimed them to be ‘chiefs’ of the tribe. He had his assistants explain to them that he wanted to purchase 600, 000 acres of ‘their’ land, in return for blankets, tomahawks, knives, scissors, handkerchiefs, shirt and other clothing. Not only was this deal completely one sided, there were lots of other tribes occupying the land and it was not theirs to sell. The Aboriginals couldn’t actually understand what they were saying and they had a spiritual connection to the land that the British didn’t acknowledge. We will write a custom essay sample on Settlement or Invasion? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Due to the nomadic lifestyle of the Aboriginals, they believed one area of land was just as good as any other. Batman brought out the paperwork and almost forced them to sign it. â€Å"Each of the eight Aborigines was taught to hold a pen †¦ his fingers were guided in making wavy strokes against his name. † (Year 9 Resource Booklet, p. 48) The first settlers had no malicious intentions coming to Australia, but their method of ‘settlement’ was ignorant and could be seen as an invasion rather than a settlement. Whether intentional or not, British settlement made an impact on the Aboriginals. When the Europeans moved to Australia, they brought diseases such as smallpox along with them. The Aboriginals immune system could not cope with the foreign diseases and many died as a result. They introduced alcohol to the Aboriginals. The alcohol was deadly because it had never been in their system and it also caused conflicts and fights. They captured young Aboriginal men and tried to integrate them into their society by teaching them ‘civilised and industrious’ habits. Because of Batman’s treaty, the Aboriginals had no rights to the land, and they were kicked out. However, â€Å"even where squatters only dispossessed the blacks and forced them on to other tribal territory, the result was death and destruction† (Year 9 Resource Booklet, p. 68). After dispossessing the Aborigines of their land, they were also denied jobs. Driven off their traditional hunting lands by men who now considered the land to be their own, the Aboriginals had few options. The Aboriginal way of life was changed drastically by British settlement, against their will. There was lots of violence and conflict between the British and the Aboriginals.

Job Interview Advice 9 Ways to Ruin a Job Interview

Job Interview Advice 9 Ways to Ruin a Job Interview Toward the end of last year, U.S. News World Report published an article by Rebecca Koenig entitled Job Interview Mistakes to Avoid. Ms. Koenig highlighted 25 job interview mistakes, and I was inspired to share some of them. Amongst the many blatant interview faux pas, you will find answering your cell phone during the interview, wearing overly casual clothing, and flirting with your interviewer. But its not just these obvious gaffes that will create problems for you with your potential next employer. Here are 9 of my favorite ways to ruin a job interview: 1. Be negative about anything or badmouth an old boss. Never say you didn’t like the kind of work you were doing at your prior job. If you didn’t like something before, the interviewer will assume you probably won’t like the work at the next job either. If you’re asked specifically to name something you didn’t like, find something minor and emphasize what you learned and what you did like. As a side note, also do not act rude or say anything negative to the receptionist. How you treat everyone in the office is part of your interview and will be judged! 2. Be late. When it comes to job interviews, being on time is being late. I don’t care whether your car broke down or your subway stalled or your printer cut off part of the address of the firm. Plan to get to the interview an hour early and none of these events will make you late. And always have the employer’s phone number somewhere where you can’t possibly lose it so if anything does happen (despite your plan to get there an hour early) you can call as soon as you know there is a problem. 3. Question whether you want the job. The interview is not the place to have doubts! Fake it till you make it. After you get a job offer, worry about whether you want the job. If you express doubts even subtly during the interview, you can be sure you won’t get the offer. 4. Apologize for any aspects of yourself or your life. Doubting yourself or any hints of low self-esteem will not help you in your interview. You are who you are and you’ve made the choices you’ve made. Be proud or at least accepting, state the facts as the facts and never apologize! 5. Fail to answer the questions. Too often, job candidates will follow the interviewer’s question with a stream of consciousness answer that does not answer the question that was asked. You might do this out of nervousness. So after each question, take a deep breath, repeat the question to yourself, and make sure you answer it – clearly and concisely. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use the question to make points you want to make. If you can find a way to slip in a story that highlights your accomplishments, go ahead! Just make sure you’re addressing the topic the interviewer wants you to address. 6. Ask salary information. This is a big no-no! You will get your salary information after you get the offer! However, do be prepared with a strategy in case your interviewer brings up the topic. 7. Come unprepared. You absolutely must do your research before every job interview! If you dont look at the company’s website, know the company’s brand and values, and use Google to find out about any newsworthy events, you are not prepared. If you don’t do this research, the interviewer will wonder whether you’ll do your research on the job. A sure sign that you haven’t done your research is asking a question you could have known the answer to by reading a company website. So don’t mess this up! In addition to researching the company, research your interviewer. Know their LinkedIn profile top to bottom – where they’ve worked, what their interests are, and who your common connections are. Come prepared with questions and conversation topics! 8. Use casual/chatty language or get too personal. We all want to be friendly, but don’t get too buddy-buddy with your interviewer. You are interviewing as a professional and your demeanor will be judged. Exhibit the demeanor in an interview that you would exhibit in the office. 9. Lie. I’d rather you make any of the other 7 mistakes listed in this article than mess up on this one. Even if you’re hired, when your lies are discovered you will be fired. What are your favorite interview stories? Please share your successes and bloopers below! A great resume and LinkedIn profile are key to landing any job interview. Sectarian conflict in Iraq Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Sectarian conflict in Iraq - Essay Example The first two pages provide an in depth analysis and commentary on the evolving nature of the conflict. It argues that the roots of the conflict have been present since the creation of the country in the aftermath of World War I by the integration of former Ottoman Empire provinces. Further the politics of the country has been based upon totalitarianism and centralized government that has been effective and efficient in suppressing any manifestation of Shiite or Kurdish nationalism and fundamentalism. After this the research study focuses on the efforts of the Iraqi and American administrations in resolving the sectarian problem. Despite superficial attempts to negate the concept of sectarianism the root causes of the conflict persist. The research paper uses the political theory of realism in order to understand the causes and nature of the sectarian conflict in Iraq. Finally it makes recommendations which will assist policy makers in eradicating the scourge of sectarianism in the c ountry. Iraq was created after World War I by the British administration by joining together former provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Three ethnic and sectarian groups, Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites inhabited this area. During the Baath party regime of Saddam Hussein, the Sunni elite had managed to suppress any manifestation of Kurdish or Shiite resurgence. However the United States invasion of Iraq and overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime has dangerously changed the balance of power and monopoly once enjoyed by the Sunni elite. Shiites and Kurds have carved out their respective zones of influence where they dominate the state and security apparatus. Fighting in Iraq has increasingly turned towards a sectarian conflict between Shiites and Sunnis. The struggle has also been a broad part of the struggle between Arab states and Iran to protect and defend their interests in Iraq. Sectarian clashes have led to the wholesale expulsion or killings of minorities with enclaves being carved out

Rise And Fall Of Traditional Forms Of Music Retail Essay

Rise And Fall Of Traditional Forms Of Music Retail - Essay Example Music industry, as we know it, finds itself in deep crisis these days. Traditional forms of music retail show constant dip in sales every year; and this trend has started to unfold quite a long time ago. On the one hand, the noughties have witnessed a dramatic downfall in traditional market sales but, on the other hand, so-called digital music sales have been boosting market share for 15 years in row and there are no signs of any stark slowing down in this business segment. The digitization of music, technological development and booming e-commerce sector have opened a window of opportunities for some music industry players and issued the challenge of unprecedented structural crisis for the others. My goal in this paper is to identify the winners and losers of a drastic decline in traditional forms of music retail, analyze the reasons that stand behind such a decline, as well as its consequences, and find the roots of innovative ideas that have changed the face of music industry in t he 21st century. I have organized the paper into three sections, two of which have sub-sections. In the first section I elaborate on the strategic prerequisites for growth and decline in the traditional forms of music retail by making a brief retrospective journey into the history of music industry. In this section I also discuss the scope of economical and structural crisis that the music industry started to suffer with the advent of new technologies and rapid development of the Internet.

The stories success Essay Example for Free

The stories success Essay Technology would have the greatest overall effect on the stories success. To keep up with the competition constant training and flow of inventory has to be maintained drawing heavily on capitol resources. Also the skill level of employee’s would dictate a higher pay structure then required by regular toy stores. Rapid changes in technology would require a very liquid inventory. Items could quickly become antiquated, decreasing there value possible beyond original cost; at the very least putting pressure on the companies profit margin. This also means stock must be replaced whether old stock has been sold or not. This puts pressure on devaluing old stock even further to make space for incoming new stock. People already skilled in the industry need to be acquired. This will require offering more competitive salaries and benefit incentives to gather and retain these individuals. As these individuals are trained in new technology and gain more experience the company will have to aggressively instigate programs to retain these individuals with rich compensation raises and other more costly incentives such as stock options or profit sharing. Finding such rarified individuals might prove difficult causing the involvement of staff agencies, again increasing overhead costs. Also people might not like the idea of a toy store, filled with children, right next to where they will eat. Meal time is considered by most as a time to relax and unwind, which might not be done as easily in a restaurant attached to a congregation point for children with buzzing and flashing toys. A quieter establishment across the way might look more appealing.
